The official trailer for Wicked is here!
The movie musical, set for release on American Thanksgiving 2024, is directed by Jon M. Chu, with a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and music by Stephen Schwartz. This duo also wrote the book and music for the 2003 Broadway musical of the same name that the film is based on. Schwartz also promised the movie will feature two new songs.
The play, and by default this movie, is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. It is both a prequel to, and alternate perspective on the events of The Wizard of Oz.
The trailer reintroduces us to Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, who is later known as The Wicked Witch of the West, Ariana Grande’s Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum playing the really not all that powerful Wizard of Oz. These characters were also in the teaser trailer released a few months ago. The full, official trailer fleshes out their stories a bit.
It also shows Doctor Dillamond, the history professor who is also a goat, voiced by Peter Dinklage. Plus we get an expanded look at this modern cinematic treatment of the Land of Oz. And it looks, well, wicked:
