The third and final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch is set to start streaming on Disney Plus February 21st with a three-episode premier, and the official trailer dropped today. And it does have some surprises. Well, one really one big surprise.
We start off with the expected: the titular Bad Batch (all voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) trying to find and save Omega (Michelle Ang) from The Empire, whose agents captured her at the end of the last season. She’s still being held at Mount Tantiss along with Crosshair (also voiced by Baker). We also find out that Phee Genoa (Wanda Sykes) is still with them, which makes sense, as she became a defacto part of the group in the final episodes of Season 2.
Two minor surprises are the return of Cad Bane (Corey Burton) and Emperor Palpatine voiced by original movie actor Ian McDiarmid). Those two are clearly around in the galaxy in the early Empire setting of the show, and they did appear in Season 1 and Season 2 respectively. However, given their major character status, we weren’t sure if they’d appear again, and now we are.
The big surprise is the return of Asajj Ventress. Sure, she was a major recurring character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (voiced by Nika Futterman), and this animated series is both the linear and spiritual successor to it. Bad Batch creator, and Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni has made crossover characters a priority. So why not Ventress?
She was killed in the 2015 Dark Disciple novel, which is considered Star Wars Canon, as opposed to the works considered Legends. But officially released ancillary content like novels and video games do not have the same Canon status as the movies and TV/streaming shows. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Filoni is undoing what happened in the novel, as the Bad Batch timeframe is quite close to Ventress’ death in Dark Disciple.
Regardless, this is still a surprise, and surely a pleasant one for many of her fans.
