When New York City unexpectedly, and suddenly, turns into a frozen hellscape in the middle of July, who you gonna call? If the cause is some sort of paranormal demon, or occurence, the answer is Ghostbusters, of course. It’s been like that since 1984. That’s the premise of the upcoming film Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, at least as far as we can tell from the first teaser trailer that just dropped.

Set for release exclusively in theatres on March 29, 2024, this is the sequel to 2021’s reboot Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and the fifth entry in the film franchise. It’s directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote it with Afterlife director and writer Jason Reitman. Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim are all back, reprising their roles from the 2021 installment. Meanwhile, original Ghostbusters players Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William (“Yes, it’s true. This man has no…”) Atherton are back as well.

While Frozen Empire follows the events of Afterlife, and moves the new characters from that movie’s rural Summerville, Oklahoma setting back to the familiar NYC Ghostbusters firehouse, it seems like it won’t be a retelling of one of the classic Ghostbusters movies from the 80s this time. Instead of another visit from a Gozer or a Zool, which we got last time, there’s an entirely new “ghost”, or at least a paranormal enemy. Something called the Death Chill, according to the film’s press release. So it’s a sequel to the the first two films, not just to the reboot.

The teaser doesn’t reveal much more than that, and the big bad is kept somewhat of a mystery. We do get a look at the striking (literally) ice visuals, the cast, and the overall look the film is going for.
