“In an age of light, a darkness rises.”

That’s the slogan for the new live-action Star Wars series The Acolyte, which starts streaming with a two episode premier on Disney Plus June 4th. The show, created by Leslye Headland, is set at the end of The High Republic, 100 years before the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (the start of the Prequel Trilogy). While there are books, comics, and video games set in this time period (some canon, some legends), this is the first time the era will be seen in a Star Wars show or film.

While it’s possible a couple of familiar Star Wars characters pop up in the show, we’re going to be meeting a whole new group of Jedi, smugglers, and maybe even some Sith. In the first trailer released today (which is the same one that screened at Star Wars Celebration last year), we see Lee Jung-jae’s Jedi Master Sol training a group of Younglings, Carrie-Anne Moss’s Jedi Master Indara in action, as well as Amandla Stenberg’s Mae, described as a former Padawan, who we can tell is clearly no fan of the Jedi.

The trailer gives us a hint of the plot: someone is killing Jedi, as well as many new locales in the Star Wars Universe. We do get a few familiar ones, too, like the Jedi Temple on Coruscant from the Prequels, and some shows, plus what looks like Ahch-To, the planet Luke was on in the Sequels.

We also see a Wookie Jedi, and a whole bunch of red lightsabers. Does this mean there will be a whole bunch of Sith? Or are we sticking with the Rule of Two, and these are just Sith…wait for it…Acolytes?
